We had a fantastic time representing Weymouth, alongside our friends from Made-to-Measure Pantomimes, at the Great British Pantomime Awards on Sunday!
Our 2017 Christmas pantomime Sleeping Beauty was nominated for Best Panto at the annual awards, held this year at the New Wimbledon Theatre.
Unfortunately we didn’t win on the night, but to be nominated as one of the best pantomimes in the country alongside such big venues and productions was an incredible achievement. An immense number of people worked so hard on the show over Christmas, and we couldn’t be prouder of all of them! While other award categories were for specific elements of a show, our nomination was for best overall production and is a testament to the fantastic work of every single member of the team.
While we all thoroughly enjoyed the glitz and glamour (it’s always nice to get out of the office!), there was an important message that was repeated again and again throughout the evening: pantomime is not a ‘dirty word’. Pantomime is such an important part of our industry and is the lifeblood of regional theatre in the UK. For many theatres, pantomime literally keeps the doors open and guarantees packed houses every Christmas up and down the country. This is a fantastic form of entertainment and one of our greatest traditions, offering something for everybody, from little kids to grannies and grandads. Panto is so important because it is often a child’s very first experience of live theatre and long may it continue!
At Weymouth Pavilion we love pantomime so much we don’t just stop at Christmas! Our hit summer pantomime Pirates of the Pavilion is returning this July and August for its fifth year to take you on a brand new Jurassic adventure for the whole family!
Made-to-Measure Pantomimes will also be back in December with our spectacular Christmas panto Dick Whittington! Tickets are already on sale and selling faster than ever so make sure you book your seats quick!
Thank you to everyone who came to see and supported Sleeping Beauty last year. We love our audiences and you’re the reason we do what we do and keep coming back for more.
Here’s to another successful panto season!
